Therapeutic massage may be valuable to patients who:
- have not responded well to physical therapy
- want to try an alternative approach
- want to utilize a complementary approach which may enhance recovery
- have pain conditions which may not warrant physical therapy
- are trying to reduce their dependence on or volume of pain medications
Surgical patients who:
- still have active pain symptoms post surgically
- need ongoing pain management
Therapeutic massage is a valuable addition to the pain relief, pain management and rehabilitation processes. The Massage Therapy Group (MTG) focuses on excellence in training and utilizes advanced techniques such as neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release, manual lymph drainage, deep tissue work, manual lymph drainage, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and active stretching.
A well trained massage therapist has extensive experience working directly with the musculoskeletal system. He/she learns to feel ischemia (areas of reduced blood flow, congestion and restriction), hypertonicity (tightness), and has specialized techniques to release pain and restriction. Massage therapists at the MTG bring complementary skills to the work of other health care practitioners: medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, dentists and other bodyworkers. Skilled massage therapists are valued members in a holistic approach to healthcare and alternative medicine.
An advantage of therapeutic massage is direct access to the therapist without the need for a referral from other healthcare providers. However, it is an out of pocket expense that is rarely covered by health insurance. If a patient does have a referral from an MD or chiropractor he/she is not required to pay sales tax in NJ, and will have a better chance of getting reimbursed from a medical expense account. Upon request at time of sevice the MTG can provide receipts which may be applied to itemised deductions for tax purposes. The patient would need to consult their tax accountant.
